ASD Diagnostics in Adulthood

ASD Diagnostics Northern Ireland

Thrive is a specialist multidisciplinary team providing diagnostic assessment for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in adults.

What is ASD?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition affecting approximately 1:100 of the population. It affects the way a person communicates, interacts with other people, and how they experience the world around them.

“The core features… are persistent difficulties in social interaction and communication and the presence of stereotypic (rigid and repetitive) behaviours, resistance to change or restricted interests.”

“People with autism also commonly experience difficulty with cognitive and behavioural flexibility, altered sensory sensitivity, sensory processing difficulties and emotional regulation difficulties. The features of autism may range from mild to severe and may fluctuate over time or in response to changes in circumstances” (NICE guidelines 2012)

Benefits of a diagnosis

  • ASD is a recognised disability and diagnosis can open up supportive pathways which enable individuals to reach their potential and improve their quality of life.
  • Getting a diagnosis as an adult can help the individual identify and understand their past challenges and current strengths and difficulties. Then find helpful ways of coping and managing.
  • It can help individuals who are having difficulties accessing or maintaining education/ employment gain specialist support including reasonable adjustments.
  • It may help the person access appropriate services and benefits.
